Campus Situation - 校园场景
话题:付费给戏剧助手并提供培训
Currently, the assistants who help with the production of plays on campus are student volunteers who are not paid or fully trained. I suggest that the theater department should pay the assistants who help out with plays and also give them special training.
As someone who has been in campus productions, I know that using volunteers doesn't work because they often arrive late for rehearsals or not at all, and they don't know a lot about operating stage equipment.
However, paid assistants would be more motivated to provide reliable help. They would also be able to operate stage equipment more effectively because they would have better training.
Sincerely, Sally Smith
W: Hey, Dan, what about this letter? You think it would help?
M: Definitely. The problem is student assistants have to work at other jobs to make money, so the real jobs always come first.
W: What do you mean?
M: I mean like one of my friends was working for a show last year as a production assistant. He didn't show up for play rehearsal one night because his boss for his other job told him he had to stay late at work. He had no choice.
W: So if he'd been paid to do the show...
M: Then he wouldn't have needed the other job. It wouldn't have gotten in the way because helping out with the play would have been his main job.
W: I guess that's true. But what about the training thing? Is that necessary?
M: Absolutely. You know, the equipment that assistants have to operate now is a lot more complicated than it used to be. You really need to know what you're doing, so you don't mess up.
W: Yeah, especially on the night of the performance.
M: But having someone professional show them what to do, you know, someone who knows all about the latest equipment, show them step by step how to work it.
W: I see what you mean.
M: Not only would their skills improve, but the plays would be better too.

The student proposes that the theater department should pay student assistants who help with plays and provide them with special training.
The man agrees with this proposal.
First, he says that paying assistants would solve the problem of them missing rehearsals. Student volunteers often have to work other jobs to make money, and those jobs take priority. For example, his friend was a production assistant but had to skip rehearsal one night because his boss at his other job required him to work late. If the theater work was paid, it would be his main job and he wouldn't need other work.
Second, he thinks training is necessary because stage equipment has become much more complicated. He mentions that assistants need to know how to operate the equipment properly so they don't make mistakes, especially during performances. Professional trainers could teach them step by step, which would improve their skills and make the plays better overall.
So that's why he supports the proposal.
